Youth Offenders Library Scheme in Kent
We aimed to:
- produce an information leaflet for Young People leaving detention centres about Library services in Swale district.
- pilot a scheme for Young People to have one to one support sessions with a Youth Offending Service mentor who would introduce them to the library and its services with emphasis on how to use the resources to help them with their homework and/or job applications
- enable the young people to maintain links with their ‘ementor’ or to access their ‘eportfolio’. Both ‘e’ schemes are part of other provision that is currently about to be offered to young offenders.
Prior to release each Detained Young Person will receive a leaflet containing information on Kent Libraries services that will be relevant to them in the Swale district. This leaflet was designed by consulting with Young Offenders on what Library resources they would be interested in.
Accessing Library Resources
Each Young Offender will receive information on library provision through a one to one session delivered by a Youth Services Mentor at a Swale Library.
To use Library resources to support and encourage young offenders learning opportunities and achievements.
We hope if the pilot is successful to roll this out countywide.
